The invention of the optical lens, a kind of man-made eye, has been fundamental to the development of photographic technologies. From daguerreotype to recent successes in microscopic imaging using lenses that imitate the fly's eye, the idea of biomimicry seems to play an important role in these developments. At the same time, the geometry we often see as artificial appear in nature in various forms, both on micro and macro scales.
Wildlife photography is a cross section of nature and technology. We often think of technology as the opposite of nature, but the relationship between the two might be much more fundamental than we realise.

Commissioned by the Natural History Museum for the annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year.
